The large RSPB reserve at Arne (about eight miles from Winfrith) is a place where the whole family can enjoy a large area of open heathland and old oak woodland on the shores of Poole Harbour.

 

There are walks to enjoy all the year round, and the RSPB holds regular Children’s Days for visitors.

The reserve is a haven for all sorts of wildlife, not just birds, and there is something to be seen at all times of the year, including rare Dartford Warblers nesting in the heather and thousands of wading birds in Poole Harbour in the winter

 

You may also spot deer, squirrels and invertebrates if you keep your eyes open.

To get to Arne from Winfrith take the A352 to Wareham. In the centre of Wareham turn right at the traffic lights and when you reach the next village (Stoborough) turn left just past the King’s Arms into Nutcrack Lane and follow the signs to Arne.

 

The RSPB car park is at the beginning of the village.

The Shipstal and Coombe trails are open at all times; the car park opens at 8.30 am and is locked at dusk.
