MORETON
Moreton is a village a short drive from Winfrith Newburgh which has a range of attractions for all the family.
To reach Moreton, drive through the village to the main road, and take the road opposite the Red Lion inn. This leads onto Winfrith Heath and past the buildings that formerly housed the Winfrith Atomic Energy Authority reactor site (now being decommissioned).
At the T junction turn left and Moreton is just over a mile along the road; there is parking by the side of the road as you enter the village.
On your left as you enter Moreton is a small cemetery that is the last resting place of T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. After the First World War he served in the army and RAF and lived in a cottage called Clouds Hill a few miles away near Bovington Camp.
In 1935 he was fatally injured in an accident whilst riding his motorcycle and was buried in Moreton cemetery.
The parish church of St Nicholas and St Magnus has achieved international fame owing to the series of clear etched windows created by Laurence Whistler after the original windows were blown out by German bombs during the Second World War.
To reach it walk through the white gate beside the road and down the drive to Moreton House for about fifty metres; the church is on a small rise to the right.
Moreton Tea Rooms provides welcome refreshments in what was the old village school, and down a side track a few metres from the Tea Rooms is what is thought to be the longest ford in the country – ideal for splashing about in on summer days.
Walk across the bridge here and there are extensive walks in the woods.
